UNIQUE ANTIQUE ENGLISH BOXED WOODEN BOWL SHIP'S COMPASS BY F BARKER & SON

PROVENANCE: When Francis Barker opened his factory in 1848 he ordered rubber stamps and metal punches bearing his distinctive triangular trademark.  This compass has been enthusiastically marked everywhere possible with stamps of different dimensions.  He was trying out his new stamps.  Such enthusiasm would only be expected in the very first days of trading.  The stamps are all the pre-1875 version, and the decorated East mark and overall style also date the compass to around 1848.  The card has been balanced by slitting the underside card cover, and slipping weights into the slit, a method abandoned by Barker by 1850 when he started using sealing wax to balance the cards.
