RARE ANTIQUE GEORGIAN ENGLISH BOXED WOODEN BOWL SHIP'S COMPASS
Rare maritime (whaling) compass dating to circa 1820 - 1840
Wooden bowl nautical compasses are extremely rare. This compass is in excellent condition, with original glass and original putty sealing. The wooden bowl and lack of decorated East date the compass to the early 1800s, possibly even very late 1700s
The original box has seen some weathering, with a shrinkage split to the base, and slight warping to one of the walls, creating a gap (see photographs)
The gimals work perfectly, and the compass points accurately to north.
The compass is unsigned, but its style, the wooden bowl with no East decoration date it to the early 1800s
Decorated East became popular around 1840, and lost popularity around 1870, when wooden bowls had been replaced by brass
This compass is over 180 years old
Box dimensions: 17.3 x 17.3 x 11.6 centimetres
Bowl diameter 11.7 centimetres
Card diameter approx 9.5 centimetres
