Exquisite condition, almost like the day it was made!
Gold plated. The white enamel dial and original glass have no cracks or chips. The original gold plating is over 95% intact and perfect.
The jewel capped English bar needle has no rust or blemishes and points perfectly to north.
The transit lock (small lever at the bottom of the compass) works perfectly and blocks the needle when the compass is not being used.
Dimensions: the compass measures 42mm in diameter excluding protrusions (neck & lock lever).
The original Morocco leather case has no missing leather, and the hinge and clasp are in excellent condition, as is the silk lining in the lid and the velvet lining in the base.
This is a stunning example of a gentleman's pocket compass that is between 138 and 169 years old - Potter traded from Poultry, London, between 1851 and 1882.
