ANTIQUE AND VERY RARE WOODEN POCKET COMPASS BY F BARKER & SON circa 1865

An extremely rare compass (only the second I've ever seen).  The compass is not signed but this is guaranteed manufactured by F Barker & Son of 12 Clerkenwell Road, London, circa 1865.

F Barker & Son manufactured several wooden cased instruments, and its signature marks were the very elegant "hidden hinge", where the hinge tabs are hidden in slots made into the wood, and the check-mark shaped clasp.  No other manufacturer used the hidden hinge technique, and the style was dropped soon after the death of Francis Barker Snr in 1875.

The compass is in very good cosmetic condition, with just some very slight foxing to the paper dial.  The transit lock works correctly and locks the needle automatically when the lid is closed, and releases it when the lid is opened.  The original glass is in perfect condition.  Diameter 71mm.  This is an extremely rare compass.
